Chengdu, the host city of the 31st Summer World University Games (Summer Universiade), is in full swing to realize the goal of holding a “simple, safe and splendid” competition from July 28 to August 8 and will present to the world an international sports event with unique Chinese characteristics.

The World University Games, hosted by the International University Sports Federation, is a comprehensive world games second only to the Olympic Games in scale. Sprinter Michael Johnson, basketball superstar Larry Bird, Liu Xiang, Li Na and other sports stars have all participated in the event over the years.

Looking west from Longquan Mountain in the east of Chengdu, we can see the venue for the opening ceremony of the Chengdu Universiade — the main stadium of the Dong’an Lake Sports Center. It will hold activities such as the opening ceremony of the Universiade, gymnastics, and swimming competitions. The Chengdu Universiade Village in the campus of Chengdu University was completed in March 2021. Covering an area of about 800,000 square meters, it can hold about 11,000 people. The village will become the home of international youth, providing various services such as accommodation, fitness, business, leisure and entertainment and boosting cultural exchanges among people from around the world.

Chengdu has tried to create a smart Universiade by using new technologies such as 5G, 8K, internet of things, cloud computing, AI and big data. Using these, they have built systems of information, management and service and have applied them to the smart functions of venue management, game viewing experience, media communications and other scenarios. In terms of transportation, Chengdu will allocate (分配) more than 1,700 new energy vehicles as the service buses for the Universiade. More than 80 percent of the special transportation vehicles for the event are expected to be new energy vehicles.
