On the afternoon of November 29, a house in Langshi Village, Xiangtan City suddenly caught fire. The kitchen was burning fiercely, with thick smoke and flames rushing out. The roof was badly damaged, and the heavy wooden pieces supporting it could come down any minute.
Yang Yixin, an 11-year-old girl, was visiting her grandmother when she sensed danger. “I smelled something burning,” she said. The power had just gone out, so she went outside to check. That’s when she saw the neighbor’s house on fire and realized no one was home. She quickly informed her family and, using her grandmother’s phone, called 119. “I called 119 right away and told them the address clearly,” she added.
Yang and her family also found piles of firewood behind the burning house, and there were dense woods nearby. If the fire spread, it could cause a forest fire. They quickly moved the firewood to a safe place.
Soon after, when firefighters arrived, they put out the fire. It turned out the house owner went to cut trees, leaving the fire for making larou (a kind of smoked meat) unattended. Thanks to Yang’s quick action, a bigger disaster was avoided. For her bravery and quick thinking, her school honored her with the title “Little Fire Safety Guardian.”
