The 20th China’s Film Huabiao Awards, the highest government honor for Chinese films, was held on April 27, 2025, in Qingdao, Shandong Province. This marked the first time the event took place outside Beijing. Known as a “natural studio”, Qingdao is home to modern movie bases like the Oriental Movie Metropolis. In 2017, it became China’s first city to earn the title of “City of Film” from UNESCO.
Lots of filmmakers attended the ceremony to celebrate the best Chinese movies released between July 2022 and June 2024. Ten films won the Outstanding Feature Film Award, including Zhang Yimou’s courtroom drama Article 20 and the sci-fi hit The Wandering Earth 2. The animated movie Ne Zha 2, which broke box office records in China and ranked among the top five highest-grossing films globally, received the Special Contribution Award.
Director Guo Fan won Outstanding Director for The Wandering Earth 2, while Zhang Yi and Kara Wai were named Best Actor and Actress. Awards also went to rural, children’s, and minority-themed films like I Am a Mountain and The Little Horsewhip, showing the diversity of Chinese cinema.
The event highlighted China’s growing role in global film. In 2025, Chinese movies earned over 25 billion yuan, continuing the industry’s strong growth. This year is especially meaningful as it marks 130 years of world cinema and 120 years of Chinese film.
The ceremony’s main visual (视觉的) design featured a golden dragon and stairs, symbolizing filmmakers’ efforts to reach new artistic heights. The ceremony was broadcast live on CCTV and online platforms, allowing millions to join the celebration.
By honoring creative stories and talented artists, the Huabiao Awards encourages filmmakers to keep sharing China’s culture with the world. As one award winner said, “Chinese movies will continue to inspire people everywhere with dreams and hope.”
