In 2023, Shanghai started its first full survey of local biodiversity. These days, scientists found exciting results in Chongming District. They discovered three new species: one new to China and two new to Shanghai.
One new species is called Surirella paranavis. It is a type of algae (藻). This algae was never recorded in China before. It lives in slightly salty water and is very sensitive to environmental changes. Its body is S-shaped and covered with tiny lines.
Two new midge (摇蚊) species were also found. They are Nanocladius rectinervis and Corynoneura parvula. These midges are new to Shanghai. Midges look like mosquitoes but are harmless. Their mouths cannot bite. Most midge larvae (幼虫) live in mud and eat dead plants or bacteria. They help break down waste and improve water quality.
Last year, the survey team checked 46 water areas in Chongming. They studied big lakes, small rivers, and even some rivers in Jiangsu Province. Scientists collected mud samples and used special nets to catch tiny creatures.
These discoveries show Chongming’s water ecosystems are rich and complex. Some species might have lived here for years without being noticed. More studies will help us understand why they appeared here.
