In April, the streets of Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, come alive with the Water-Splashing Festival. This special event is the New Year for the Dai people and a nationally protected cultural event since 2006. Ethnic groups like the De’ang and Blang also join the celebration.
The festival lasts three days. People wear bright clothes, sing, dance, and splash water to wash away bad luck. A popular saying goes: “More water means more luck!” This fun tradition also helps local tourism. Many travelers come to enjoy this special event.
There are two ways to splash water. “Gentle splashing” (文泼) uses clean water to lightly sprinkle others, especially elders, as a sign of care. “Playful splashing” (武泼) is lively — people use buckets or water guns to soak everyone, laughing and shouting: “Stay wet, stay happy!”
People follow rules to keep the festival respectful. Water must be clean, and splashing avoids faces. For locals, it’s a time to share joy, connect with friends, and pass on traditions.
