Liu Zhicheng is using brushes and paints to paint on the walls of buildings in Yongsheng County, Lijiang City, southwest China’s Yunnan province.
27-year-old Liu grew up in the countryside. He studied the wall painting for about six years. In 2020, Liu and his friend began painting walls for free. Their first work included painting the walls of an ancient town in Chongqing. In about three months, they finished seven wall paintings.
Liu borrows cultural highlights from guochao, which is known for its interesting designs using different elements(元素) from traditional culture. “I have a deep interest in rural China and hope to do my part in bringing some modern street decorations(装饰) to villages,” Liu says. Last year, he began a two-year project of painting 100 walls in his hometown Yongsheng. So far, he has finished more than 30 walls. It usually takes him about two to three days to finish a simple wall painting and more than a week for an elaborate design.
Liu has recorded what he did and posted the short videos on the Internet. His videos are popular on the Internet. His artworks have added color to the countryside and are attracting tourists. Many children also come to see him paint, and some of them even made paintings of their own to show them.
“I will pay more attention to Chinese cultural elements in my wall paintings and decorate more walls in villages to draw visitors,” says Liu.
