After over a year of careful renovation, the Zigong Dinosaur Museum in Sichuan Province, Asia’s first professional dinosaur museum, has completed the upgrade of its core exhibition hall and officially reopened to the public. It now offers visitors an immersive “real-life Jurassic Park” experience with brand-new interactive displays, restored prehistoric scenes and newly unveiled (公开) precious fossil specimens, greatly improving the overall visiting quality.
Founded in 1987 on the ancient Dashanpu fossil site, the museum sits on massive fossil layers dating back 160 million years. It houses one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of Middle Jurassic dinosaur fossils, covering almost all known Jurassic dinosaur species and serving as a key base for professional paleontological research at home and abroad.
The latest renovation features two stunning exhibits being displayed to the public for the first time. One is a nearly complete Huayangosaurus taibaii fossil, a primitive stegosaur species. Well-preserved with complete bones, the 4-meter-long fossil perfectly shows the creature’s physical features. The other highlight is the skull of Mamenchisaurus youngi, a rare local long-necked dinosaur.
According to the museum director Zeng Xiaoyun, the original exhibition, now two decades old, had become outdated and failed to meet modern visitors’ diverse needs. To fix this problem, the museum introduced advanced technologies like naked-eye 3D and digital projection. These vivid digital systems break through the limitations of traditional static (静态的) displays, bringing ancient dinosaurs and complex geological changes back to life.
