For the first nine months of their lives, twin boys Artie and Jack lived in a world without sound. They were born very early. The boys were mostly healthy, but they could not hear at all. Both of them were born deaf.
The doctors in Australia decided to do a very special surgery (外科手术). They gave both boys cochlear implants (人工耳蜗) on the same day. This was the first time in Australia that twins had surgery together like this. Dr. Rithvik Reddy, the ear surgeon, said it was a big challenge. They had to plan carefully, but it was worth it. Doing it on the same day helped the family a lot. It also made the boys go through the experience together.
After the surgery, Emily and her husband Ewan took good care of the boys. When the time came, they went to a hearing center to turn on the implants. That day was very vital to the family. Emily called it the peak day of the whole process. Ewan said it was the start of a new life for the boys.
Emily felt very emotional when the implants were turned on. She could see her sons turn their heads toward her voice. Their eyes became wide with surprise. It was an amazing moment. Ewan said that every morning, they turn on the implants for the boys. The twins smile and show that they understand what their parents say. Their older brother Tommy also loves to see them react.
The whole family feels thankful. For Ewan, the ability to communicate with his sons is a true gift and a miracle.
