Jiang Linhan, a 14-year-old Grade Eight student from Chengdu, has received an amazing gift. Standing out from over 300 competitors all over the world, he is one of six winners of the 2026 Joseph Tsai Basketball Scholarship (奖学金). It will fully support his four-year study at Tilton School, a top US boarding school famous for training many NBA players.
Sports talent runs in Jiang’s family. He is 1.9 metres tall, and both of his parents are professional athletes. His father is 1.97 metres while his mother is over 1.7 metres. When he was in Grades Three and Four, he tried tennis, volleyball and basketball to relax after school. Soon basketball became his favourite sport, so his parents sent him to a training club to take part in regular matches. When he was a sixth grader, he gave up tennis and decided to fully focus on basketball.
Later Jiang entered Yulin Middle School, which has a long, proud tradition of school basketball. He trained for two hours every day and did strength training twice a week to build up his body. Friendly senior students and caring coaches always gave him lots of support during training and games. His parents told him to keep a good balance between schoolwork and sports. Once his grades dropped sharply, he paused training to catch up with his studies. He studied ahead during holidays and always stayed in the top five of his class. All these efforts laid a solid foundation (坚实的基础) for his coming study at the American boarding school.
Though Jiang felt tired from time to time, his deep love for basketball pushed him through all difficult days. This autumn, he will fly thousands of miles to study in the US by himself. The scholarship pays for most of his costs, but it requires him to keep excellent grades at school. He dreams of becoming a professional basketball player and believes basketball will open a bigger and brighter world for him.
