Li Yaode, a Chinese vlogger, has drawn wide public attention. His video recording a 2,229-kilometer taxi trip from Chongqing to Lhasain the Xizang Autonomous Region, won him the grand prize of 500,000 yuan from local tourism authorities. He plans to donate most of the money, causing heated online discussions about tourism development, official rewards and online creators’ influence.
Xizang’s tourism department recently launched a reward program for original travel videos. Videos with over five million likes can get the 500,000-yuan grand prize. Li’s 22-minute video fully met the standards and attracted millions of genuine views, so officials promised prompt payment of the prize money.
In the video, Li left Chongqing by electric taxi on June 26 and arrived at the Potala Palace after seven days. Two local drivers took turns driving along National Highway G318, while Li filmed stunning scenery, local food and warm roadside encounters. The video earned over 21 million likes on Douyin within days.
After learning about the award, Li announced his plan. He would give 10,000 yuan to each of the two taxi drivers and donate the remaining money.Internet usershad mixed reactions to his donation. Some hoped he could help poor local families or schools directly, while others advised him to work with Xizang officials to support local villages.

Yet they also reminded young creators not to copy Li’s trip blindly. The long drive cost a lot and brings dangers like altitudesickness (高原反应) and sudden bad weather. Some newspapers also suggested the government take into account more useful metrics (指标) besides video likes, such as rising travel bookings brought by these popular online videos.
