A group of 23 Hungarian artists, art educators, students and cultural workers recently finished a special cultural tour of ancient architectural heritage in Shanxi Province, northern China. Lasting from June 17 to late June, the tour covered three major cities: Taiyuan, Xinzhou and Datong. The group visited world-famous cultural sites such as the Yungang Grottoes, Pingyao Ancient Town and the iconic Yingxian Wooden Pagoda. By sketching on site, doing field research and creating original artworks, all participants gained precious first-hand experience of Shanxi’s splendid historical and cultural treasures.
As a core treasure trove of traditional Chinese architecture, Shanxi enjoys a reputation as “a museum of ancient Chinese architectural art”. It preserves over 80 percent of China’s existing wooden buildings dating back to before the Yuan Dynasty. Featuring delicate and ingenious wooden frame structures, these ancient buildings fully show the wisdom, superb skills and unique artistic tastes of ancient Chinese craftsmen.
Why does this tour matter beyond art? Such valuable cultural exchanges come amid booming bilateral relations (双边关系).In recent years, China-Hungary ties have developed steadily. The two countries set up a new-era all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024, opening new doors for cultural and people-to-people exchanges. Dankó Réka Tünde, a cultural organization representative, pointed out that art serves as a global language, breaking language barriers to convey human emotions and thoughts. She added that this tour provided Hungarian participants with a precious chance to feel Shanxi’s profound cultural heritage up close. Rather than merely being art creators and exhibitors, the participants acted as important cultural ambassadors, making their original artworks symbols of dialogue and friendship between the two countries.
