The film A Love Letter to Ah Ma has recently gained wide attention. Screenwriter and director Lan Hongchun shared the story behind the movie in an article in People’s Daily. The Chaoshan dialect film uses qiaopi (remittance letters) as a narrative thread and is described as “a love letter to all overseas Chinese and to the homeland.” Lan said that the inspiring true stories he encountered while filming the documentary Flavors of Teochew from the Four Seas — such as overseas Chinese donating money to build schools and roads — formed the creative foundation of the movie.
