A white bison calf (牛犊) was born in Yellowstone National Park’s Lamar Valley. Park visitor and wildlife photographer Erin Braaten saw it, and she happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Braaten is from Kalispell, Montana. She visits Yellowstone a few times each year, but she never imagined she would witness such a rare (罕见的) and important moment. She stopped and took some photos of the calf and its mother.
Braaten, who has Native American heritage, explained the important meaning behind the birth of a white bison calf. “It’s a great thing. It means there could be a good change coming,” she said.
A white bison calf is important in Native American culture, particularly to the Lakota people. According to Lakota legend (传说), the birth of a white bison calf fulfills a prophecy (预言) that promises better times ahead. The legend tells of a time around 2,000 years ago when there was not enough food and bison were becoming impossible to see. White Buffalo Calf Woman appeared, presenting a sacred pipe and a bundle to a tribal member, teaching them how to pray and bring buffalo back. As she left, she transformed into a white buffalo calf.
