Not everyone has the chance to take language classes. But that doesn’t mean you have to be stuck with language learning apps. Keeping going is key to unlocking the door of mastery. No matter which method you choose, it’s important to revisit the language you are learning every day, even if it’s just for 15 minutes. The following are some creative ways to help you with a new language.
One of the most common advice is to enjoy films and shows in the language you are learning. To be exact, watch children’s cartoons. There are often basic phrases and words in these cartoons. Plus, cartoons usually come with clearer and slower pronunciation.
If watching cartoons is not your cup of tea, you can listen to podcasts (播客) and songs in the language you are trying to master. By doing so, you can pick up idioms, explore various topics to increase your vocabulary, and understand small differences between words.
When practising speaking, you might be afraid of making mistakes when trying to practise in public or with a native speaker. So, instead, start small. Speak to your pet or an object around the house. Tell them about your day or describe how you feel. The goal is to get used to sounding the letters and getting the words out. As you grow more confident, work up to the waiters at an authentic (真正的) Chinese restaurant (or whatever language you may be working on) or a native speaker.
As for writing, one useful method is to keep a pen friend. Ideally, find someone who is fluent (流利的) in the language you are learning. Through the letters, you get to practise your writing skills.
