Two friends survived a wrecked (失事的) ship during a storm at sea. They swam to a small, desert-like island.
The two friends didn’t know what else to do. They thought they had no other choice but to pray (祈祷). To find out whose prayers were more useful, they agreed to divide the island between them and stay on opposite sides of the island.
The first thing they prayed for was food. The next morning, the first man saw a tree on his side of the land, and he was able to eat its fruit. The other man’s side remained barren. Later, the first man prayed for a house, clothes, and more food. The next day, all of these were given to him. However, the second man still had nothing.
Finally, the first man prayed for a ship so that he could leave the island. In the morning, he found a ship on his side of the island. The first man boarded the ship and decided to leave the second man on the island. As the ship was about to leave, the first man heard a voice from heaven (天堂), “Why are you leaving your friend on the island?” “His prayers were all unanswered, so he does not deserve anything,” the first man answered. “You are wrong!” the voice said. “He had only one prayer, which I answered.” “Tell me,” the first man asked, “What did he pray for?” “He prayed that all your prayers would be answered.”
