Youngsters in England are living in fear of being ‘unemployable’ and ‘worthless’ because of poor job prospects, a survey reveals.
The tough jobs market has left more than half of young people feeling worried about finding work with one in seven (15%) fearing they will never find the right career.
A survey of 2,000 young people, aged 16-25, found 53% were nervous about their employment prospects.
Nearly two out of five (37%) of youngsters said they “almost never or never” got a reply or feedback when applying for jobs. And of those who failed to get a reply, most (64%) felt they weren’t worth being employed and one in five felt lonely, worthless or angry.
More than one in four (26%) felt the jobs market is too competitive and there are are too few jobs. One in six (15%) said they did not get the right support, including careers advice and mentoring, at school or college.
An officer said, “A job is more than just ‘what you do’, it is a part of who you are and gives people a sense of worth.Young people across the country have told us they don’t feel employable, and feel uncertain, lack confidence and are not getting the support and advice they need.Giving the most vulnerable young people the right support and advice to help them get on the job ladder is important.”
