I was on a three-week holiday with two of my fellow nurse friends from California. We planned to spend three weeks in Thailand, a week in Bali, and a week in Indonesia, and then head home. We flew into Bangkok on April 8, 2014.

It just happened that Kate, who is from the small village of Devizes, England, was doing the same thing with two of her English friends. We were in Bangkok at the same time, visiting the same attractions, but we didn’t know each other yet. 

My friends and I were planning to take the overnight train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, Thailand, for Songkran, the world’s largest water fight, which lasts three days and celebrates the Thai New Year. As fate would have it, my friend and one of Kate’s friends ended up in the same bunk. We decided to change, and that’s when the conversation started. It was a day I will always remember, because for me it was love at first sight. 

I instantly wanted to know everything about this beautiful English girl. With some time and some liquid courage, I finally made my move on Kate. I ended up making a fool of myself — maybe I’d had too much liquid courage — but the next morning, with my tail between my legs, I took great courage to get to know her. After a 14-hour train ride, we could both feel the growing chemistry. We traded information and met later that night to explore Chiang Mai. 

The connection between us grew with each moment we spent together exploring the city. We met for the Songkran celebration and spent the entire day staying each other with water guns during the water fight. It was one of the most fun days of my life.
