Every year, in spring or autumn, school kids all over Japan, from kindergarten to high school, take part in their school sports day. On this day, kids have a chance to test their sports skills and compete with their schoolmates in different kinds of sports events. It is also a great chance for the students’ whole family to enjoy fun time together. A large number of families come to cheer for their kids on that day.

There are a lot of races that are popular on sports day in Japan. In a three-legged race, students are paired up; they stand next to each other and their two legs in the middle are tied together. Students will then walk or run as fast as they can to the finish line.

An egg and spoon race is another popular sports day activity in Japan. Each child will have a spoon and a real egg. The child will run with the egg on the spoon to the finish line and then back to their team. The next child will then do the same until each child in a team has finished their task.

Some schools there also hold non-competitive events like traditional Japanese dancing and singing. At the high-school level, students do more than just compete in sports events. Many students take part in cheering squad. Each class makes up its own cheering squad to add more energy to this exciting day.
