A schoolgirl has killed herself after she was blamed for unfinished homework. Yu Liao, 11, jumped from the seventh storey balcony of her home in eastern China's Zhejiang Province after her parents gave her a massive row over homework that she had not finished.

Arriving in school one Monday having not completed her homework over the weekend, Yu Liao had a strict warning from her teacher.

Yu Liao's mum Yu Shen, 39, was so familiar by her daughter's behaviour that she cried at her in the school office, and was then given permission to take the girl home to finish her homework.

"I was really upset that my daughter who is usually very obedient did not do her homework as the teacher had instructed. I scolded her on the way home to make sure she didn't repeat the same mistake again."

On her return home, Yu Liao was given another task and, after completing the contentious homework. Although she was taken to hospital, doctors were unable to revive her after her heart stopped.

The primary school principal, Zheng Chu, said nobody thought something this serious would happen, and revealed that he had rushed to the hospital after hearing about the incident.
