Gifted Michael has never been taught, instead he started teaching himself from educational games and videos on his mother’s iPad from 18 months.

He learned how to read eight-letter words and corrects mother Emma Greenwood, 39, if she makes mistakes while reading his bedtime story.

Despite being able to count in English, Spanish, Russian and Japanese, his family said he still loves riding his bicycle. Mother-of-two Emma, a postwoman from Yate, Bristol, said: “We don’t push him, he teaches himself." He is interested by numbers and big words. "He’ll say, ‘Mummy, how do you spell this?’ and I’ll say, ‘I’m not sure’ – and we work it out together. “Times tables are his favourite." He has taught himself to count in Spanish, Japanese and Russian.”

Emma and husband Anthony, 33, a chef, noticed Michael’s abilities when he started teaching himself on the iPad. He knew the alphabet before he could walk and was reading by the age of three. Emma, also mum to Ashton, 16, said: “He was watching educational videos on YouTube and teaching himself Spanish. "He reads his Mr Men books by himself all the time.“ Shopping takes forever because he likes to add things up. "He asks how much something costs, I tell him and he will work out the change.”
