Writing an essay or paper for school can feel like – and often is – a big challenge. But a teacher from Duke University has some ideas to make it easier -- and have better results. 

Jennifer Ahern-Dodson is a writing teacher. She believes getting advice and suggestions from others can help. Students usually share their writing only when it is finished and ready to give to the teacher. Instead, she suggests that you write an early draft. Then, ask yourself who can give you helpful advice on what you have written. Who can I share it with? Who can give me advice? That means finding the right reader at the right time. 

Ms. Ahern-Dodson says you may want more than one reader to give you advice. You may want a writing group. Yes. A writing group is very helpful for your writing. Everyone in the group has to be willing to share their own writing. They hand in their own work in time. And the advice should be useful, but not just "Good job!'" or "Great!" without real thought.

She says sharing writing can make many students feel less nervous when they write a paper. This is the idea of a student who goes into a room alone and 12 hours later comes out with a good paper. Some people call this "binge" writing.

Yes, some people can do that successfully. But it's not a nice experience that you want to do again and again and again.
