It's 2023 now. Aurora Sky Castner is 18 years old. Recently, she has been accepted into the famous Harvard University after graduating third in her class.
Aurora Sky Castner was born in the jail (监狱). Her father picked her up from the jail and raised her as a single dad. Her mother was kept in jail and has never been a part of her life. When she was in primary school, she met Mona Hamby. It was her who changed Castner’s life.
At the time, Hamby join a community mentorship (导师制) program where adult volunteers have lunch with young students at least once a week. She was given a paper about Castner. After reading the paper, she knew something about Castner, and she thought Castner sounds like a bright little girl. Hamby still has that paper today.
“She told me ‘I’ve been to jail’. I said ‘No, that can’t be right.’ I knew that I can’t just go eat lunch with this kid, she needed more,” Hamby said. She became a major part of Castner’s life since that day. She took her to cut her hair for the first time, helped her get glasses, and was there when she toured Harvard.
Castner not only succeeded in getting accepted into Harvard—but she will also be attending the famous Ivy League school on a full scholarship (奖学金). “Girl set a goal to go to Harvard in primary school despite being born in poverty. Received full scholarship to attend Harvard in 2023,” Hamby said. Castner said she is “beyond excited to be attending Harvard College in the fall”.
