After getting into an argument with his mother, an 11-year-old boy from Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, got on his bike determined to reach his grandmother’s house. He actually told his mother so during their fight. However, she never actually believed him, because her mother lived about 140 kilometers (87 miles) away in Meijiang Town. She underestimated the boy’s determination, because he spent about 22 hours cycling day and night on busy roads trying to achieve his goal. He only stopped when his legs couldn’t carry him any longer, but by that point he had already covered an impressive distance of about 130 km.

On the evening of April 2nd, some passers-by noticed the 11-year-old boy exhausted and alone in an expressway(高速公路) tunnel and immediately called the police. When officers asked the child where he was from and what he was doing there, they were shocked to learn that he had pedaled almost without stopping after leaving his home in Hangzhou in an attempt to reach his grandma in Meijiang. He was reportedly so tired that policemen had to carry him from their car into the police station.

The police told reporters that the boy only used road signs to know where to ride, which caused him to take a wrong turn several times during his journey. Still, despite taking almost twice the time as it should have to get as far as he did if he didn’t lose his way, the 11-year-old was only about an hour from reaching his grandmother’s home. During his challenge, he survived only on bread and water he picked up before leaving home.

Both the boy’s parents and his grandmother came to pick him up from the police station, and his mother said that she thought his threat of going to his grandmother was just a childish tantrum(耍性子).

1.Why didn’t the boy’s mom take his threat of going to his grandmother seriously?

A Because his grandmother wasn’t at home.

B Because he told his mother it was a joke.

C Because his grandmother lived far away from them.

D Because he never said so to his mother.

根据第一段第三句的“because her mother lived about 140 kilometers (87 miles) away in Mejiang”可知,因为男孩的外婆住在140公里外,因此男孩的妈妈认为他不可能自己去外婆家。故选C。

2.What does the underlined word “exhausted” mean?

A Very tired.

B Regretful.

C Frightened.

D Energetic.

解析:选A。 根据第一段最后一句“He only stopped when his legs couldn’t carry him any longer”和第二段最后一句的“He was reportedly so tired that policemen had to carry him from their car into the police station.” 故选A。

3.Which is TRUE according to the passage?

A The boy took a phone with him to find direction.

B The boy arrived at his grandmother’s home safely.

C The boy didn’t have any food during his 22-hour trip.

D The boy went in the wrong direction several times.

根据第三段第一句的“which caused him to take a wrong turn several times during his journey”可知,男孩一路看路牌骑行,走了很多冤枉路。故选D。

4.How might the boy’s mother feel when she got the call from the police station?

A Disappointed.

B Shocked.

C Embarrassed.

D Ashamed.
