Recently, Ian made landfall in America, bringing heavy rains and winds, and dangerous flooding. More than 130 died, and hundreds of thousands of homes remain without power. Hurricane is terrible. We can’t prevent it, but we can do something to protect ourselves. Here are the things you need to get and do early to be ready for a hurricane.
Have a plan for a hurricane.
Make sure you have all the emergency phone numbers. That includes the numbers of family members, doctors, teachers, and anyone else with whom you may need to get in touch in an emergency. You can write them down. Know the nearest shelter to your home, too. Pay it a visit and plan out all the different routes you could take there, in case your primary route is somehow disrupted. Talk to your family—especially your kids—about how you’ll get to the shelter, what they should do if they can’t find you, and where you’ll meet them if you have to.
Prepare something for the hurricane.
Pick up some medicine you and your family may need. Prepare some emergency food and water (ideally enough to last at least three days). Buy some flashlights and prepare some batteries, because your house may have a power cut. Think of it like you’re packing for a trip. Keep them all in a bag somewhere that your family can get quickly. Check them at the beginning of each hurricane season to be sure any medications, foods, or other special items haven’t been out-of-date.
Don’t forget your car.
Have an emergency kit in your car, too, and don’t ever let your vehicle get too low on gas. If you don’t have a vehicle, make sure part of your emergency plan includes talking to neighbors or family members who do have one about whether it would be possible for you to evacuate with them if necessary.
