It was after midnight. Clifford Saint Jean was in the bedroom at home. He woke up to the sudden noise next door. He looked outside. He saw that the house next to his was on fire. On the second floor, a family were trapped(困住).

A mother with a teenager and a 5-year-old child were shouting for help inside the burning home. They were unable to get down the stairs because there were thick smoke and flames. The only way out of the burning house was through the window. Thinking fast, Clifford ran into his backyard and pulled an old mattress(床垫). He quickly put it under the woman’s window.

“   ▲   ,” Clifford called up to the family. He told the mother that he would catch the child. In an act of trust and desperation(绝望), the mother dropped her child out of the window. He fell straight into Clifford’s arms. Moments later, the mother and teenager jumped too. They landed right on the mattress.

The family were all safe. The mother was so grateful that she couldn’t stop thanking Clifford for helping. Clifford said he was “happy” he could help the family get away from the fire.
