Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning(统治) monarch(君主), died at Balmoral Castle, Scotland on Thursday afternoon, at age 96.

The woman she surpassed(超过) as the longest reigning monarch was her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, whose era(时代) was known as the Victorian age. Similarly, the 70 years, seven months and two days of her reign became the modern Elizabethan age. Her 73-year-old son Prince Charles will become Britain’s new monarch. He will be known as King Charles III.

Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor was the first child of Albert, Duke of York, and his wife, formerly Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. The young Elizabeth and sister Margaret enjoyed a comfortable, happy and close family childhood, but all their lives became different in December 1936. The Queen’s uncle, King Edward VIII, gave up the throne(王位), and out of the blue, her shy father became the country’s next king, a role he had never expected to take. In 1952, when the young Princess Elizabeth was on a trip to Kenya, the news came through of the death of her father. At the age of 25, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II, and a new era had begun, one that has only ended now, 70 years later. 

Elizabeth ever promised the people of Britain and the Commonwealth that “my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.” It was a promise she kept across more than seven decades. Though it was rainy, there were many people outside Buckingham Palace and some members cried when they knew the sad news.
