Zoe Wood recently hit her first homerun(全垒打) not once but twice in the same game. This girl can catch, hit, and play the field. She’s so good, and people don’t even notice the things that make her different from her other teammates.

For one thing, Zoe is the only girl on her team. Another fact that sets her apart is her limb(肢) difference. She was born without all of the fingers on her left hand.

Zoe started playing baseball at a very young age, and her hand never caused any problems. She learned to accommodate her difference early on, holding the glove in a way that gives her control of the ball even without the use of fingers.

“We just treated her like everyone else. We never let her difference get in her way at all. Zoe has accommodated to baseball playing,” said her father, Jeff.

Zoe says she runs into kids who are curious about her hand, but she simply tells them she was born with the difference. Once they see what she can do on the field, they quickly see her as the strong, talented player. In fact, it’s her gender(性别) that surprises people more than her limb difference.

“I think they’re surprised that I’m playing,” she said. “No one else is really playing as a girl.”

Zoe tells us there’s nothing we can’t do, even if the equipment(装备) we were born with doesn’t look exactly like everyone else’s. We can’t wait to support her when she achieves her dream of being the first woman to play for the major leagues!

1.What made Zoe different in her team?

A Her two hands.

B Her young age.

C Her being sick.

D Her being a girl.

2.What does the underlined word “accommodate” mean?

A Pay attention to.

B Take notice of.

C Make clear.

D Deal with.

根据划线部分下文“holding the glove in a way that gives her control of the ball even without the use of fingers”可知她在练习不用手指就可以控制球,由此可知她很早就在学着处理/适应她的不同。故选D。

3.What can we infer from Jeff’s words?

A He was proud of Zoe.

B He was sick of Zoe.

C He gave up sadly.

D He supported Zoe.

根据第四段“We just treated her like everyone else. We never let her difference get in her way at all.”

4.What’s Zoe’s dream?

A To make a lot of money.

B To encourage girls to play baseball.

C To play for the major leagues.

D To write a book about baseball.

根据文章最后一句中“We can’t wait to support her when she achieves her dream of being the first woman to play for the major leagues!”

5.What can be learned from the passage?

A Where there is a will, there is a way.

B It is never too old to learn.

C A wise head makes a close mouth.

D No one is born wise or learned.

解析:选A。 根据全文内容可知,Zoe克服天生左手没有手指的肢体缺陷,像正常人一样打棒球;另外,根据最后一段第三句中的“there’s nothing we can’t do, even if the equipment we were born with doesn’t look exactly like everyone else’s.” 故选A。
