While getting a driver’s licence(执照) is a symbol of independence for many teenagers, Chloe Familton, 16, flew to the sky after getting her solo(单独的) pilot’s licence late last year.

Chloe Familton is a student. Her family’s long-running interest in aviation(航空) encouraged Chloe last year when she went to an open day at Scouts NSW’s Air Activity Centre at Sydney’s Camden airport. “My grandfather was a navigator(驾驶员) in the air force, so I guess I’m the third generation to be interested in aviation,” she said.

After the Scouts NSW open day, Chloe Familton began training with her father Scott Familton and they got their flying licences at the end of last year. “I was pretty scared when she went up in the air for her first solo, as any dad would be, but she did it very well,” Mr Familton said.

Mr Familton and his daughter were among those celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Air Activity Centre. Learning to fly was one of the most important activities offered by it.

“We’ve got an interesting program of activities which is how we are making ourselves much more attractive to what young people want,” said the worker in the Air Activity Centre.
