Sun Jiarui, 10, is a fourth grader at a primary school in the city of Wuxi, East China’s Jiangsu Province. She can cook more than 50 dishes, which is not easy—even for an adult.

Outang Central Primary School, which Sun attends, has set up a cooking studio. And Sun is a teacher in the cooking class. She teaches her classmates to make simple dishes there. “I hope that the course will provide us with more chances to know basic life skills and share the burden(负担) with our parents,” says Jiarui.

Sun Jiarui’s father is the owner and cook of a farm restaurant in Wuxi. He said Jiarui started helping out with chores when she was around 4 or 5. When she was 8, she asked her father to teach her to cook after school. Her father also shot some videos of Sun Jiarui’s learning process and posted them online. 

Short videos of the young cooking star have become popular, and people are surprised at her amazing cooking skills. She has more than 830,000 followers and 9 million likes on Douyin. “It’s beneficial for her to know some life skills, so she can better take care of herself when she grows up,” said Sun Jiarui’s father.

“It was out of curiosity at first, but finally, I fell in love with cooking,” says Jiarui.
