Parts of South Florida were hit with heavy rain, local flooding and wind Saturday as a storm system that had previously hit Mexico moved across the state. Officials in Miami warned drivers about road conditions as many cars were stuck on flooded streets. “This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation. Traveling during these conditions is not recommended. It’s better to wait. Turn around, don’t drown,” the city of Miami said.

The city was carrying trapped vehicles from flooded roadways. At least one tree had fallen over a house in Pompano Beach, displacing its residents, since staying there could potentially lead to death, according to CBS Miami. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the storm, once known as Agatha in the Pacific Ocean, will be known as Alex in the Atlantic Ocean basin, if it reaches tropical storm status.

As of 11 p.m. ET, the storm’s center was located about 145 miles east-northeast of Fort Pierce, Florida, and about 840 miles west-southwest of Bermuda. It was moving northeast at 20 mph with maximum sustained(持续的) winds of 45 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. The storm is expected to reach tropical or subtropical storm strength on Sunday, NHC said. Further strengthening was possible, NHC noted, but said gradual weakening of the system was expected “early next week.”

In Cuba, the storm killed three people, damaged dozens of homes in Havana and cut off electricity in some areas, according to authorities. Heavy rainfall continued on Saturday, but was becoming weaker as the weather system moved away from the island.

The Atlantic hurricane season officially began Tuesday. This is an unusually early start to the storm season but not unprecedented(史无前例的) for Florida.

1.What did officials suggest drivers in Miami doing?

A They should speed up their vehicles.

B They should move across the state to Mexico.

C They should stop driving their cars.

D They should leave Miami as soon as possible.

根据第一段的“Traveling during these conditions is not recommended. It’s better to wait. Turn around, don’t drown”可知,迈阿密官员建议他们不要在这种路况下行车。故选C。

2.What does the underlined word “displacing” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A Testing.

根据前文的“At least one tree had fallen over a house in Pompano Beach”可知,一棵树倒在了一所房子上;结合后文的“since staying there could potentially lead to death”可知继续待在那所房子里可能会导致死亡;由此推断房子里的居民被迫搬出来了。故选D。

3.When will the storm probably become weaker?

A Next Monday.

B Next Friday.

C Next weekend.

D Next month.

解析:选A。 根据第三段最后一句的“Further strengthening was possible, NHC noted, but said gradual weakening of the system was expected ‘early next week.’” 故选A。

4.Which of the following is true about Havana according to the passage?

A Residents needed fresh water.

B Some people suffered a power cut.
