Jennifer Vernancio is a single mother of two and she has been a waitress(女服务员) for three years. Last Wednesday, she met with some problems and felt bad before work. By the time she began to work, she was hoping that her day would turn around.

“My first table of the day was a very, very nice man and his wife,” she said. The couple ordered sandwiches, paid their bill(账单) and left. “The man said ‘Have a nice day!’ to me when leaving. I said, ‘You too.’” said Vernancio. “I go over to pick up the check(支票). I don’t even know they left me an $810 tip(小费). I keep thinking to myself, ‘Are you kidding? This can’t be!’ I brought it to my manager and at first I said, ‘This can’t be.’ But she said, ‘Oh no, that’s it’.”

Vernancio said she has never got a tip like that. She never got the name of the couple, but she will never forget the act of kindness. It made her day. She bought her daughter a pair of new shoes, sent her son a toy police truck, and paid off some bills.

“To the man and his wife, I just want to say thank you so much. It meant a lot,” Vernancio said. “The kindness behind the money made me smile the rest of the day.”

1.When did Vernancio begin working as a waitress?

A In 2016.

B In 2017.

C In 2018.

D In 2019.

根据第一段的“she has been a waitress for three years”可知,Vernancio已经做了三年服务员,即她是从(2022-3=)2019年开始当服务员的。故选D。

2.How did Vernancio feel when finding the tip?

A Surprised.

B Tired.

C Hungry.

D Angry.

解析:选A。 根据第二段中的“I don’t even know they left me an $810 tip.” This can’t be!” 故选A。

3.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph Two?

A The bill.

B The table.

C The check.

D The couple.

根据前文的“I go over to pick up the check.”

4.Which is TRUE according to the passage?

A Vernancio has two daughters.

B Vernancio got a bigger tip before.

C The tip made Vernancio’s day better.

D The couple were Vernancio’s friends.

根据第三段中的“It made her day.”以及最后一段的“The kindness behind the money made me smile the rest of the day.”

5.What can be learned from the story?

A Money can’t buy everything.

B Kindness can be found anywhere.

C It doesn’t matter to be rich or poor.

D It’s easy to make money as a waitress.
