Have you ever dreamed about quitting your job and moving to an affordable place where you might not need to work? According to International Living’s 2026 report “Cheapest Places to Live in the World in 2026”, this idea is more realistic than you think. Here are 4 of the 11 most budget-friendly destinations.
Vietnam
Why: Vietnam is one of Asia’s top bargains, boasting great value, rich culture and shockingly affordable healthcare. A contributor paid just $225 for a full checkup including lab work, scans and an English-speaking doctor’s consultation.
The Cost: A single person lives comfortably on $1,100–$1,300 monthly; a couple on $1,450–$1,750. Long-term rents range from $350–$650. Local meals, public transport and domestic travel are cheap, letting people enjoy modern comforts for less than in the U.S.
Greece
Why: Greece tops both the cheapest places and retirement lists, offering Mediterranean beauty, rich culture, modern healthcare and attractive housing options at low prices.
The Cost: Singles spend $1,600–$1,850 monthly; couples $2,050–$2,350. Rents are $700–$1,100 monthly, lower outside tourist areas. Daily expenses are reasonable by European standards, with high-quality, affordable healthcare.
Mexico
Why: A popular U.S. retirement spot, Mexico impresses with close distance, excellent healthcare, modern infrastructure, low costs and diverse lifestyles from beaches to colonial towns.
The Cost: Singles need $1,500–$1,800 monthly; couples $2,100–$2,450. Rents are $600–$1,000 monthly. Affordable private healthcare and daily costs make it ideal for people earning dollars and spending local currency.
Malaysia
Why: Malaysia stands out for modern infrastructure, English-speaking environments and great value — Penang offers a 2-bedroom apartment with complete facilities for $870 monthly or less.
The Cost: Couples live comfortably on around $2,500 monthly, with modern apartments renting under $900. Dining, entertainment and healthcare are cheap, with routine doctor visits costing just $50 on average.
