The 2026 Spring Festival travel rush kicked off at midnight on Monday, with an estimated 9.5 billion cross-regional trips expected to be made nationwide over the following 40 days, setting a new record high.
During the travel period, self-driving remains the major mode of transportation, accounting for about 80 percent of all trips. Rail and air trips are forecast to reach 540 million and 95 million, respectively, with both total numbers and daily peaks expected to surpass previous records during the same period.
