Key Advice from Language Learners

Last week, an online Language Book Club event brought together eleven experienced language learners from around the world. Through a series of interviews, they shared their thoughts on writing, language learning, and overcoming challenges. ____1____

Forget about fluency.

Many language experts do not like the word “fluency.” ____2____ Instead of worrying about becoming “fluent,” try setting a short-term goal, such as finishing a book in the new language within a month. One speaker explained that if you can keep a conversation going without too much misunderstanding, you are doing very well.

Do not worry about your accent.

When you speak a new language, you may feel shy about your accent. However, people will usually be friendly and patient. One speaker told a story about making mistakes while speaking Spanish in Puerto Rico, but locals still appreciated his effort. ____3____ You can improve your pronunciation later.

____4____

No single method makes language learning easy for everyone. Some learners focus on speaking from day one; others spend more time on pronunciation. Different tips work for different people. All the speakers at the event have studied languages for years. Their advice comes from practice and habit. The real key is to enjoy the process.

Take it easy sometimes.

If you feel stressed, it is okay to slow down. Do not try every study method at once. ____5____ Language learning should match the way you learn best. One speaker compared it to using a cookbook — try the recipes that appeal to you, and you will still make progress.

A. It is too vague and does not help you set clear goals.

B. The discussion offered many practical insights for students.

C. You should always try to sound like a native speaker.

D. The important thing is to start using the language.

E. There is no secret shortcut.

F. Choose what fits your style and interests.

G. Using only one textbook is the best way to learn.

1.1.

A

B

C

D

解析:选B。B 题空位于第一段结尾,需要一句承上启下的总结句。前文介绍了活动背景(brought together... learners... shared useful ideas),B项“The discussion offered many practical insights for students.”中的“The discussion”指代前文的访谈活动,“practical insights”概括了“useful ideas”,并自然引出下文将详述的这些见解(具体建议)。故选B。

2.2.

A

B

C

D

解析:选A。A 题空位于“Forget about fluency.”段落的第二句。首句给出观点:Many language experts do not like the word “fluency.”。A项“It is too vague and does not help you set clear goals.”中的“It” 直接指代“the word ‘fluency’”,并解释了专家不喜欢它的原因(too vague),与首句构成“观点+原因解释”的逻辑关系。后文的“Instead of...”则给出了解决方案。故选A。

3.3.

A

B

C

D

解析:选D。D 题空位于“Do not worry about your accent.”段落中举例之后。前文通过故事说明,即使犯错也会被接纳(locals still appreciated his effort)。D项“The important thing is to start using the language.”是基于前文故事得出的核心行动建议,意为“关键是开始说”,与“不要怕口音”的主题完全一致,并引出下句“发音可以后期改进”。故选D。

4.4.

A

B

C

D

解析:选E。E 题空位于一个独立段落(无小标题)的段首。通过分析下文内容:No single method... Different tips work for different people... advice comes from practice and habit,可知本段核心是驳斥“捷径”思维,强调实践与习惯。E项“There is no secret shortcut.”完美充当该段的主题句(Topic Sentence),总领全段。下文全部是对这一主题的具体阐述。故选E。

5.5.

A

B

C

D

解析:选F。F 题空位于“Take it easy sometimes.”段落中间。前文建议Do not try every study method at once(不要同时尝试所有方法),F项“Choose what fits your style and interests.”给出了积极的、具体的行动指导(“选择”对应“不要都试”),是该建议的正面展开。后文match the way you learn best和recipes that appeal to you都是对“fits your style and interests”的同义复现或具体说明,逻辑连贯。故选F。
