On the evening of January 17, China defeated Uzbekistan in the quarterfinals of the U23 Asian Cup, advancing to the tournament’s semifinals.
The match was tied 0-0 after 90 minutes of regular time, forcing the game into extra time. China remains the only team in this edition of the U23 Asian Cup that has not conceded a single goal during regular time across all four matches played.
With neither side able to break the deadlock in extra time, the match was decided by a penalty shootout. Chinese players scored four out of five penalties, while two Uzbek players missed their shots, securing China’s 4-2 victory and their place in the semifinals.
China had already achieved its best-ever finish in the tournament by reaching the quarterfinals, and now has rewritten history once again. The team will face Vietnam in the semifinals on the evening of January 20.
