Following the New Year’s holiday, airfares on many domestic routes in China have seen significant drops, with some as low as 10% of the original price, prompting off-peak travel. Guangzhou Baiyun Airport has recently welcomed many such travelers, who find current trips more cost-effective. Booking platforms show fares from Guangzhou to Shanghai hit a low of 210 yuan (ex-tax) on Jan 7, equal to an 89% discount. Industry analysts predict price fluctuations as the student winter vacation begins in mid-to-late January.
