Ahead of the 2026 Lunar New Year, many regions in China have adjusted their fireworks management measures, shifting from sweeping bans to a more refined model that permits fireworks only during designated times and within specific zones, so as to balance traditional culture, public safety, and environmental protection.

Provinces including Shandong, Guangdong, and Yunnan have successively revised their rules, replacing previous blanket prohibitions with a system that clearly defines "prohibited zones" and "restricted zones." For instance, several districts in Foshan City, Guangdong, now permit fireworks in designated areas during holidays including New Year's Day and the Spring Festival.

This adjustment, however, does not represent a one-size-fits-all approach. While some areas have relaxed restrictions, others—including the core urban districts of Nanchang and Jiujiang in Jiangxi Province—have reaffirmed their year-round, city-wide bans on fireworks. Previously, Chengdu optimized its regulations to allow fireworks in eight county-level cities and counties within designated restricted zones on four specific days, including Lunar New Year's Eve (with a full ban in case of heavy pollution alerts). Shanxi Province took a significant step by officially repealing its province-wide ban and delegating regulatory authority over fireworks to its cities and counties.
