王维的诗笔墨魂与辋川烟云

Wang Wei (701-761) was one of China’s most famous poets and painters during the Tang Dynasty. People also called him “Minister Wang of the Right”. He excelled in poetry, music, and painting.
Wang Wei was born in Chang’an, a wealthy and safe capital city. He showed literary talent at just nine years old. In 721, he passed the important imperial exam. He got a high government position but was later sent to work in Jizhou. After returning to Chang’an, he faced difficult times when rebel soldiers captured the city. During this period, he wrote a famous poem showing his loyalty to the emperor.
In his later years, Wang Wei became very sad after his wife and mother passed away. He moved to his countryside home near the Wheel River. There, he studied Buddhism and found peace in nature. Many of his best poems were inspired by the beautiful mountains, rivers, and trees around his home.
Wang Wei was among China’s earliest landscape painting masters. He created special black ink paintings of natural scenes, especially snowy mountains. He used unique ink techniques that made his artworks stand out. Though his original paintings are lost today, art books still describe their beauty.
His poetry remains equally important. Like the famous poets Li Bai and Du Fu, Wang Wei is considered one of the greatest poets in Chinese history. His works perfectly blended painting art with poetic beauty. This made him a cultural treasure whose influence continues today.
