唐诗宋词:中国文学史上的两颗璀璨明珠

Do you know classical Chinese poetry? It is poetry written, spoken, or chanted in the Chinese language. Here are some introductions to it.

Classical Chinese poetry

Classical Chinese poetry is traditional Chinese poetry written in classical Chinese and typified (是……的典型) by certain traditional forms and connections with particular historical periods. For example, Tang poetry refers to poetry written in or around the time of or in the characteristic style of China’s Tang Dynasty, following a certain style. It’s often considered as the golden age of Chinese poetry. Song poetry refers to classical Chinese poetry of or typical of the Song Dynasty of China. Many of the best known classical Chinese poems are from the Song Dynasty poets, such as Su Shi, Ouyang Xiu and Lu You.

The first Chinese poet

Qu Yuan (340 BC – 278 BC) is considered to be the first author of verse in China to have his name associated (联系) with his work. Why? Because before that time, poetic works were not linked to any specific authors.

The oldest Chinese poem

The earliest Chinese poetry begins with the Classic of Poetry, a collection of 305 poems of various length, drawn from all ranks of Chinese society. It is also translated into English as the Book of Songs.
