五禽戏:以动物之形养身心
五禽戏:以动物之形养身心

Wu Qin Xi (五禽戏) can be regarded as the earliest form of Medical Qigong in Chinese history, dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Wu Qin Xi was created by Hua Tuo, a well-known Chinese doctor who lived from 110 to 207 AD. Hua Tuo not only helped his patients when they were sick, but he also liked to recommend physical exercises for people as a method of recovery, and most importantly for prevention. According to Hua Tuo, doing exercise often is important for staying healthy and recovering from illness, and it makes the body stronger, helps blood move better, and makes us healthier.

“The human body needs exertion (运动), but it shouldn’t be pushed to the limit. Moving helps our blood flow well, which keeps us from getting sick. The ancient people did special exercises, like walking like a bear and turning their heads like an owl. They stretched and moved all their parts to stave off old age. In this way, they could stay young longer. I have an exercise method called ‘the exercise of the five animals’. The first is the tiger, the second is the deer, the third is the bear, the fourth is the ape, and the fifth is the crane,” Hua Tuo said to his student Wu Pu.

Wu Qin Xi is practiced by imitating the actions, breathing patterns and sounds of the five animals: tiger, deer, bear, ape and crane. It includes some standard forms of movements, and spontaneous (自发的) movements and sounds. These animals represent different feelings and attitudes. They all influence your thinking and behavior. They help you feel more confident and proud.
