奇迹!阿根廷艾滋病患者未经治疗痊愈!

Scientists say a woman has been healthy again from HIV(艾滋病病毒) without having any medical treatments.

Researchers have named the 31-year-old mother, who was first made sure with HIV in 2013, the “Esperanza patient”, after the town in Argentina where she lives. In English, “esperanza” means “hope”. The co-authors of the study, which was published Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, said they believe their findings will bring hope to about 38 million people living with HIV all over the world.

“I enjoy being healthy,” the Esperanza patient said. “I have a healthy family. I don’t have to take medicines, and I live as if nothing has happened. God has favoured me a lot.” Dr. Xu Yu, a viral immunologist, said, “It is really a wonder that the human immune(免疫) system worked.” He worked with Dr. Natalia Laufer to lead the search for any living HIV in the woman’s body. “She also gave birth to an HIV-negative(阴性) baby in March 2020,” he added.

So far, researchers have successfully cured two other people — in both cases through complex and dangerous stem cell transplants(干细胞移植).

“The study sets the standard for proving that the Esperanza patient has no HIV DNA within her cells,” said Dr. Carl Dieffenbach. “The more of these patients we find and work up, the more complete our understanding of what a cured patient looks like.”
