    Can Xue’s real name is Deng Xiaohua. She was born in Changsha in 1953. She loves writing. But she was not raised to be a writer. She worked as a worker, tailor (裁缝), and medical practitioner (执业医生) for almost 20 years. But she never gave up on her passion. 39 years ago, she published (出版) her first novel, Yellow Mud Street.

    Her other important books are Old Floating Cloud and The Barefoot Doctor. Some of these books have been translated (翻译) into other languages. Some have been chosen for textbooks in top universities in the US and Japan.
