Sun Yang is a three-time Olympic champion from China. On Sunday, he won the gold medal in the men’s 400m freestyle at the 2024 National Summer Swimming Championships in Hefei, Anhui province.

Sun is a member of Zhejiang team this time. He finished the race in three minutes and 49.58 seconds. After returning from a 51-month suspension, the 33-year-old showed his power and influence by leading the race from the first 200m.

“I could have done better,” Sun said after the competition. “Four years away from competition, and without intense training, I do feel rusty in controlling the speed, and I need more competitions. But it’s a good start for my comeback, and I’m happy with this result.”

In June 2021, a group from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that Sun Yang went against the Anti-Doping Rule “when an unsuccessful attempt was made to collect blood and urine samples (尿液样本) from him at his living place on September 4-5, 2018.” Starting from February 28, 2020, Sun Yang was forced to stay away from swimming competition, for a period of 4 years and 3 months (i.e. 51 months).

“I don’t want to think about the past anymore because I’ve already come out from the darkness,” Sun said. He added that he aimed to serve as a role model for young people born in the 2000s and 2010s, hoping they will make great contributions to Chinese men’s swimming.
