Lhalung Dorje is a China Post staff member in his hometown, Ruo’ergai county, Sichuan province.

Years of delivering (递送) packages and communicating with people have given him a deep understanding of the local produce and the knowledge to find high-quality products at affordable prices. In March 2021, he started his first livestreaming sales event, selling dried meat, milk, local vegetables, dried mushrooms and fruits. He has held about 10 live broadcasts (直播), with sales reaching about 4 million yuan.

Yet, Lhalung Dorje’s main responsibility still lies with his postal service. Ruo’ergai sits in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang autonomous prefecture (自治州) on the northeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (高原). The special geographical conditions cause challenges for travelers, especially postal service workers like Lhalung Dorje. Lhalung Dorje walks at an average altitude of 3,500 meters and covers more than 100 kilometers in the dangerous and difficult areas. In total, he has covered more than 500,000 km and delivered more than 5 million documents and packages without a miss.

Lhalung Dorje’s father was also a postman. “I felt like my father was a hero, wearing the uniform, carrying his bag, and passing through the mountains,” he said. He remembers loving to sit on the front of the bike as a child and feeling the warmth of his father behind him, even in winter. 

In 2007, Lhalung Dorje followed in his father’s footsteps. Over the years, he has often experienced snowstorms, mudslides, landslides and rockfalls. These difficulties didn’t hold Lhalung Dorje back, and he continued on the road soon after. 

“My job is not special. But within my abilities, there is nothing more meaningful than this,” he says. “I was born and raised here. I love this land very much. I hope to help with the development of my hometown.”
