Smita has been growing her hair since she was 14. She usually washes her hair twice per week. It takes her up to three hours each time to wash her hair. She spends 30-45 minutes washing it, then she dries it before using her hands to detangle (理顺) it. Once her hair is detangled and fully dried, she braids (编辫子) it or tries it into a bun.

“I have never thrown away my hair from the past 20 years,” she said. “The idea of throwing them away makes me sad.” Sometimes her hair gets caught by her feet while she walks, causing it to break, and Smita makes sure to collect all hair too. She keeps it in a plastic bag. “It has been 20 years now, and today I have a huge hair collection.”

Smita says that whenever she goes outside with her hair down, people are “amazed”. “They are unable to believe how one can have such long hair,” she said. “People come to me, touch my hair, take pictures, take photos with me, and they often ask me what products I use, as my hair is beautiful.” 

Smita is glad to now hold this Guinness World Records title. “I will take care of my hair as long as I can. I will never cut my hair because my life is in my hair,” she said.
