A Hong Kong robotics company says it plans to produce thousands of humanoid robots in 2021. Four different humanoid models will start leaving factories during the first half of the year. One of the four is a robot named Sophia, which has received worldwide attention in recent years for looking and speaking in a very human-like way.
The company’s CEO, David Hanson, said the COVID-19 pandemic has increased need for robots. “The world of COVID-19 is going to need more and more robots to keep people safe.”
The company says it plans to offer its humanoid robots as helpers in the medical field. For example, they can be used to take temperature or do physical exercises with older people. They use cameras to recognize human faces and activities. The robots are built with tools to help them develop themselves over time. These social robots can also help take care of the sick or elderly in many kinds of medical uses.
Hanson said he believes robotic solutions to the pandemic are very useful for healthcare. He said the company’s robots are so human-like. They could also serve the public in the supermarket or in the airline. “The humanoids can be so useful during these times when people are terribly lonely,” Hanson said.
Johan Hoorn is a social robotics expert. He said that although the technology is still developing, the pandemic could speed up relationships between robots and humans. “I am sure that the pandemic will actually help us get robots earlier in the market because people will start to realize that there is no other way,” Hoorn said.
In China, robotics company CloudMinds helped set up a robot-run field hospital for COVID-19 patients in Wuhan.

1.Why has robot Sophia received worldwide attention?

A Because it can help students study.

B Because it can do a lot of dangerous work.

C Because it can look and speak in a very human-like way.

D Because it can take care of COVID-19 patients in hospital.

One of the four is a robot named Sophia, which has received worldwide attention in recent years for looking and speaking in a very human-like way.

2.The humanoid robots can be helpful in medical uses except _______.

A taking temperature

B driving for patients

C doing physical exercises with older people

D helping take care of the sick or elderly

根据第三段they can be used to take temperature or do physical exercises with older people. These social robots can also help take care of the sick or elderly in many kinds of medical uses.

3.Where can the humanoid robots help humans except in medical uses?

A In the library or bank.

B In the restaurant or bank.

C In the school or police station.

D In the supermarket or airline.

根据第四段they could also serve the public in the supermarket or in the airline.

4.What does Johan Hoorn’s words imply?

A The pandemic will make the robotic technology develop faster.

B The technology of robots is still developing during the pandemic.

C We can get robots earlier in the market if there is no pandemic.

D People start to realize there is no way for the pandemic but waiting.

解析:选A。 故选A。

5.What’s the main idea of the passage?

A An introduction of a Hong Kong robotics company.

B Humanoid robots will play a great role during the pandemic.

C Robots can help find the COVID-19 patients as soon as possible.

D An expert talks about how the COVID-19 pandemic develops in the future.
