In Brazil, a parrot was found with a seriously damaged beak that put the bird’s life at risk. Needless to say, a healthy and strong beak is a key to parrots’ quality of life as it plays a major role in eating, climbing, breaking objects, and protection.

The hopeless parrot got a second chance at life when workers at the Planura-based Animal Rehabilitation Center called “Renascer ACN” were able to reconstruct a fully functioning beak so the bird could survive. Paulo Roberto Martins Nunziata, the founder of Renascer ACN, said how they managed to make a new perfect beak for this parrot.

“This parrot was found in a terrible condition and had totally lost its beak. Together with vet Maria Ângela Panelli Marchió, we rescued it as soon as we found out,” said Paulo Roberto Martins Nunziata, who founded Renascer ACN 3 years ago to help all types of animals. “Dr. Maria Ângela Panelli Marchió helps animals rescued in dangerous condition and gives them a chance to survive and return to nature. She does well in animal orthopedics(整形外科) and makes injured animals get well with a plastic resin prosthesis(树脂假体).”

“The process is completely made by hand. The material used has a quick hardening (three to five minutes) and is so resistant that it would need a tool to be removed. Today it has a normal life. However, it just can’t be returned to its natural home because even though the prosthesis is resistant, there’s a risk of it falling over time, as these animals use their beaks for everything.”
