Is it a crazy idea to move a whole town to another place? Yes, it is. But that’s exactly what the people in Kiruna, Sweden, are doing.

Kiruna sits on a hill above Europe’s largest iron ore mine. The mine has been there for over 100 years. Because of the mine, more and more people came, and Kiruna became a city. But now, it’s also because of the mine, the city has to be moved.

As the mine is getting larger and larger, the ground under the city is slowly subsiding(下陷). People are seriously worried that the city will collapse in the coming few years. So the government has decided to move the city of Kiruna and its people about two miles farther east.

The move has already begun and will be done in a few steps. People living there near the mine will be moved first. Most homes and buildings will be built again in the new town. However, some historic buildings are being moved with special equipment to their new places.

Kiruna has wonderful natural scenery. It is a great place to see the Northern Lights. You can visit the new town when the move is finished.
