A zoo in China has caused great controversy after asking workers to dress up as gorillas. A parent has expressed anger after apparently seeing two keepers wearing full-body gorilla costumes and jumping around in the gorilla’s enclosure. The parent claimed to have been disappointed by the zoo after witnessing the scenes with the family.
Writing on a local forum, the parent claimed to have seen no gorillas after paying 180 yuan (£20) per person to enter the park; instead two workers were trying to fool the visitors by posing as the animals, the post read. The incident took place at the Yancheng Wild Animal World in Changzhou, a city in eastern China’s Jiangsu Province. 
The zoo has defended itself, saying the human gorillas were a special programme designed by the management to entertain tourists on April Fool’s Day. The gorillas were said to be played by actors. The zoo said it had not expected the arrangement to cause misunderstanding from visitors.
A statement on its social media account said, “Actors wore gorilla clothing. They sometimes sat down and sometimes played on the swings. The purpose was to bring happiness to the public.” A spokesperson said there were gorillas in the enclosure and that the performance was held outside the enclosure. 
According to the local Yangtze Evening News, while some visitors at the scene were amused by the activity, others were baffled by the fake gorillas and wanted to see the real animals. The newspaper also released footage of the event.
