The number of death in a chemical plant explosion in China has risen to 78 at present. Of the 28 missing persons reported last time, 25 were confirmed dead and 3 were safe and contacted. Among them, 34 are critically injured and 60 are seriously injured, according to CCTV. “The identities of the dead are being confirmed through interviews with family members, home visits and DNA tests,” Yancheng mayor Cao Lubao told CCTV. “The centralized search and rescue work at the accident site has basically ended and the site cleaning work has begun,” Cao added.
Local authorities investigating the cause of the accident said a number of people were taken into police office last Friday. The facility involved in the explosion belonged to Tianjiayi Chemical, a firm that mainly produces raw chemical materials including anisole, a highly flammable compound. In 2015 and 2017, the firm was fined for violating rules on solid and water waste management.
